'All Natural', 'Organic', 'Pure' are all terms we associate with safety when purchasing products. We often assume these terms equate with products that will be safe and healthy for ourselves, our children, our pets, and our homes. But, even within the realm of healthy, 'natural' doesn't always mean safe.
Pure essential oils have so many benefits. But did you know many are actually toxic to our pets?
- Cats sense of smell is 14 times more sensitive than ours. Dogs sense of smell is a whopping 1000 - 1 million times stronger than ours! So, aromas can be incredibly overwhelming for them.
- Cat's livers are missing specific enzymes that provide the ability to properly process various compounds found in essential oils. Established research has shown that many essential oils can be toxic to cats, whether taken internally, applied to the skin, or simply inhaled.
- Essential oil and aromatherapy diffusers, candles, and room sprays (in our case, smudge and cleaning sprays) are all sources of airborne essential oils that can be inhaled or licked off fur. If you can smell the aroma of the oil, that means that there’s oil in the air.
It's really disturbing that there are companies selling products and claiming that because they are 'All Natural' they are simply safe for all. Essential oils have many benefits and can have powerful healing properties, but not all are safe for all people either.
At Healthy Spirit Fitness, we have done our best to formulate our products with essential oils that are widely considered safe for both cats and dogs (and people). The essential oils in our products are also well diluted, so though very effective, they will dissipate quickly once in contact with your home surfaces, floors, etc... Even so, please use the following cautions when using our products.
How to use our products with pets
- Never apply any products containing essential oils directly to your cat's or dog's skin or coat.
- Never feed essential oil products to your pets
- Always use our essential oil products in an open, well-ventilated area and that you pet has an easy way out if they do not enjoy the smell or if they are uncomfortable.
