How does Hot Stone Massage differ from regular massage therapy?
Actually, many of the same techniques are used by the RMT but with hot stones in hand. The stones used at Healthy Spirit Fitness have been tumbled to achieve a very smooth texture. The stones are heated to between 110F-130F in a water bath for an hour prior to your arrival. Though the stones are smooth, they are also porous, allowing them to retain the moist heat. Moist heat penetrates more deeply than dry heat. So, with Hot Stone Massage, you get a deep treatment without the discomfort of elbows and knuckles digging into you.
You'll begin your treatment by lying on a set of stones. Don't worry, it won't feel like you're lying on rocks. I promise you won't even notice them. Additional stones will be placed on your chest and belly, on your forehead, in your hands, and between your toes. Then the therapist will work on your neck, arms, hands, legs, back, and feet using additional stones. Once the therapist is done with a stone, it will be tucked in around you, cocooning you in soothing heat throughout the treatment.
Hot Stone Massage is not only physically therapeutic but also quite profoundly relaxing so don't plan to make any important decisions immediately afterwards. You'll definitely want to go straight home to bask in the tranquility.
